Azerbaijan isn’t a terribly well known destination for western travellers. But we think that should change. This melting pot of a country has plenty to offer as we found during our 5 day stay here. We’ve pulled together some of our favourite photos of Azerbaijan to help inspire you to make a trip to this fascinating country.

Wander around Baku on foot for some of the best photos of Azerbaijan

In many parts of the city, you’ll find some truly unique sights. And I don’t mean a throw away line like the Eiffel Tower is unique. Sure it is, but Azerbaijan are really pushing the barrow in terms of new and different architecture. In my head now, when I think of unique, I think Azerbaijan.

Shirvinshah’s Palace

This stunning 15th century palace is described by UNESCO as one of the ‘pearls of Azerbaijan’. And it’s not hard to see why.

A visit in the afternoon will see some excellent warm light for photography and also for exploring.

Heydar Aliyev museum

I mentioned that Azerbaijan was unique right? When you search for photos of Azerbaijan, there’s no doubt this architectural design like no other pops up. We could best compare it to a melted Sydney Opera House, but really the only loose connection here is the white tiles.

Every angle of the building looks different and it deserves a wander around the perimeter. Vantages up close and further away will afford much different views, so we recommend a mix to fully take it in.

The Flame Towers

For anyone who visits Baku, the Flame Towers will be hard to avoid. I don’t think it’s possible to do a series of photos of Azerbaijan and not include them. They’re just that iconic. They sit perched upon a hill behind the city. And that hill only makes the tallest structure in Azerbaijan even taller!

Wherever you wander in Baku, there are amazing opportunities for great photos of these with varying foregrounds. I guarantee you’ll come away with plenty of photos of these magnificent towers.

High above the city

Whilst looking up at the towers can be mesmerising, you’ve got to step inside to see Baku from a bird’s eye view.

The Flame Towers, Highland Park and the TV Tower all offer excellent views down on the city. Take in the Old Town, views out to the Caspian Sea or the tallest structures at eye level.

Azerbaijan is fascinating country, and one conducive to photography as well. If you’re thinking of a visit, be sure to read of guide to planning your trip to Azerbaijan to turn that into a reality!
